Introduction

The Quon Family blog is the partial publication of the Family History Project of Kyle L. Jung. during his Junior Year at Webb School of California, Claremont CA

Being an American is not a matter of race or ancestry. It is a belief in and love of America and its ideals of freedom and opportunity in spite of any racism that may have to be endured. The story of the Chinese and Japanese in the United States, their immigration to our country, the racism endured by them during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and their eventual rise to the status of respected and valued citizens is a tribute to the definition of “being an American”. My junior family history project is the story of my paternal ancestry, the Jung family and the Quon family, from their arrival to the United States beginning in about 1890 from China, the separation of family members, the anti-Chinese racism, the rise as successful merchants in the Chinatowns of Los Angeles and San Francisco, and the eventual accomplishments achieved by each family’s current generation My junior year family history project is also the story of my maternal ancestry, the Sakiyama family and the Miyamoto family, from their arrival to the United States beginning in 1900 from Japan, the anti-Japanese racism and civil rights violations endured during the twentieth century, and the eventual accomplishments achieved by each family’s current generation.
